Maca, often referred to as a superfood from the Andes or „Peruvian ginseng“, is one of the plants traditionally used by the indigenous peoples of Peru. It is a root plant grown in the high-altitude regions of the Andes, at an altitude of approximately 3,500 metres, where it must withstand harsh climatic conditions such as low temperatures, strong winds and intense sunlight.
Maca has a distinctive, slightly sweet to malty flavour, which pairs perfectly with cocoa, for example. To ensure high quality, the maca root is washed with natural water, then dried and heat-treated. The gelatinisation process breaks down the starch structures, making maca easier to digest. The root is then ground into a fine powder and filled into capsules.
Why gelatinised maca: The difference between traditional maca powder and gelatinised maca lies primarily in the processing method. During gelatinisation, a significant proportion of the starch is removed, resulting in a more concentrated and more easily digestible product.
