Many people suffer from digestive problems. Difficult digestion can have various causes – for example, disorders in bile or stomach acid production, but it can also be a consequence of stress or incorrect eating habits. The stomach is responsible for digestion, but not for nutrient absorption (except for some proteins). Fats are broken down by the small intestine – if enzymes do not break down fat molecules into smaller parts, the body suspends stomach activity. Therefore, if we eat too much or very fatty food at once, we feel „heavy“ and as if digestion has stopped – and it actually stops. Fats are broken down by the enzyme lipase, which is produced by the pancreas, and it is activated by bile. It is therefore important that a sufficient amount of bile is available for the digestive process to proceed smoothly.
