English name Dill It probably originates from the Old English or Old Norse word „dylle“, meaning to soothe, to calm – referring to its traditional digestive effects. The earliest mentions of dill date back to ancient Egypt (approx. 3000 BC), it is also mentioned in the Bible (Matthew 23:23) and was one of the nine „holy herbs“ found in the tomb of the Virgin Mary.
In ancient Greece, carp symbolised wealth, the Romans believed it brought good luck, and in Europe, hanging one above the door protected homes from witches. In the Middle Ages, sorcerers also used it – for example, in combination with wine, it was said to encourage romantic adventures. Hippocrates, the „father of medicine,“ also created the first known recipe for mouthwash using carp.
